Capital One Venture X: pays for itself narrowly, and only through its portal

A solo traveler who books a hotel through Capital One Travel at the hotel's own price ends $11.80 ahead of a 2% card; without the portal, $295 behind.

The short answer

Capital One Venture X costs $395 a year. Julia's test asks whether it pays for itself against a no-fee 2% card such as Citi Double Cash, and for one traveler it does, narrowly: $11.80 ahead in her hotel example.

That takes three things: you would book a hotel through Capital One Travel anyway, rather than booking direct; the stay is comfortably bigger than the $300 credit; and the site charges the hotel's own price. Skip the portal and Double Cash takes the year.

A partner or children change the answer, because paid lounge visits put the year behind. For a family, the card earns its fee at the hotel checkout, not the lounge door. The Studio's verdict on fit is "Regular travel and an annual portal credit that replaces planned spending." Its limitation: "Lounge comfort has no automatic cash value in this test, and guest charges are not included."

What it costs

The annual fee is $395, and it lands every year whether you travel or not. Most of what comes back has a string attached. The comparison is a no-fee 2% card like Citi Double Cash.

Capital One's plain Venture card has a $95 annual fee and earns the same 2 miles per dollar on everyday spending. The $300 gap between the two fees is exactly the size of the travel credit, so the extra fee is the credit.

What it earns

  • 2 miles per dollar on ordinary purchases.
  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, the bank's own booking site.
  • 10,000 bonus miles each anniversary, which Capital One says are equal to $100 toward travel.

Julia counts every mile at that price, 1 cent. On $18,000 of everyday spending that is $360 back, and Double Cash pays the same, so everyday spending cannot pay any of the fee. That job falls to the travel side.

Capital One says rewards are not earned on the credit. Only the part of a portal booking you pay yourself earns 10 miles per dollar, so the credit works like a coupon, not a purchase.

The credits, used honestly

The credit is $300 every year, and it applies only to purchases made through Capital One Travel. It counts only if you would book there anyway. Against the fee it alone leaves you $95 short.

The anniversary miles close most of that gap. Add the credit and $100 of miles, take off the $395 fee, and Venture X comes out $5 ahead on paper. That is a thin lead, and the real test is the 2% card.

If you would never book through the portal, the anniversary miles are the only yearly perk that counts against the fee. You finish the year $295 behind Double Cash.

The catch

The portal's price decides the year. Capital One says it searches select travel sites, and if it finds a better price on your hotel, it automatically matches or beats it before showing you the price. If your search shows the hotel's direct price, the card works; if it shows a markup, the markup can flip the result.

Citi has a booking site too, and Double Cash pays a total of 5% cash back on hotels booked with Citi Travel. If that is how you would book, the edge is gone.

Lounges add a second catch. Your own access comes with the card. A partner can get access as an additional cardholder for $125 a year, or come in as a guest at $35 per visit at participating Priority Pass lounges. Three guest visits come to $105 and four cost $140, so the fourth visit is where yearly access wins, and a single round trip can easily be two visits.

Children cannot get Venture X lounge access of their own, because an additional cardholder has to be at least 18. They come in as guests on every visit, and at Capital One's own Lounges and Landings a guest who is 17 and under costs $25 a visit, per child.

The Studio's Wallet Score for Venture X is 65 out of 100. Its test leaves out guest charges and puts no price on lounge comfort.

Who it fits

Venture X fits a solo traveler who would book a hotel through Capital One Travel anyway, on a stay comfortably bigger than the credit, at a portal price equal to the hotel's own. For that traveler Julia's example ends $11.80 ahead of Double Cash.

It fits less well when no portal booking is planned, when Citi Travel is how you would book, or when a partner or children will use paid lounges. For Julia's example couple and family the hotel math works, but paid lounge visits put both years behind. If the credit pays for a trip you would book anyway, using all of it, the anniversary miles put Venture X ahead of the plain Venture card. If not, Venture earns the same everyday miles for less.

The arithmetic

Julia counts every mile at 1 cent, Capital One's own price.

  • On paper: the $300 credit plus $100 of anniversary miles, minus the $395 fee, is $5 ahead.
  • Without the portal: only the $100 of miles counts, so the year ends $295 behind Double Cash.
  • Hotel example: the room is $460 direct and $490 through Capital One Travel. The credit leaves $190 to pay, and 10 miles per dollar on that earns miles worth $19, so the stay costs $171. Booked direct on Double Cash, the same room costs $450.80 after 2% back. Venture X saves $279.80 on the stay, but the fee still costs $295 after the anniversary miles, so the year ends $15.20 behind.
  • Price matched at $460: you give up just $3 of miles, and the year flips to $11.80 ahead of Double Cash.
  • A couple on four or more lounge visits, with the portal matching the hotel's price: the partner's $125 a year leaves the year $113.20 behind.
  • A family with two children between 2 and 17, four visits at Capital One's lounges: $25 per child makes $50 a visit, or $200 of children's passes on top of the partner's fee. The year ends $313.20 behind.

Before you apply

On the issuer's page today, check the $395 annual fee, the terms of the $300 credit and the 10,000 anniversary miles, and the lounge prices for a partner and for children. Compare the portal's price for your hotel with the hotel's own price before booking. If the portal fits but you are weighing Venture X against Chase Sapphire Preferred, that is the next comparison.
