Citi Strata Premier: whether the $95 fee pays off depends on the point value
A $95 card earning 3 points per dollar on food, gas and travel; the fee pays off depending on the redemption, and the hotel benefit needs a $500 stay.
The short answer
Citi Strata Premier is a rewards card with a $95 annual fee. It earns ThankYou points, offers travel transfer options and has a hotel benefit for a qualifying Citi Travel booking. Whether the fee pays off depends mostly on what a point is worth to you.
On Julia's example spending of $17,400, the card earns 52,200 points. At 0.75 cent per point it finishes $51.50 behind a 2% card with no annual fee. At 1 cent per point it leads that card by $79, but a pair of no-fee cards beats it by $41. Only a transfer that replaces real travel spending, valued at 1.5 cents per point, puts it well ahead.
The Studio's one-line fit is "Diverse food/travel spend plus a planned qualifying hotel stay." A household without a trip in mind, a qualifying hotel stay or a good redemption offer on its own account has less to gain from paying the fee.
What it costs
The annual fee is $95, and the Studio's record shows no membership cost. There is no foreign transaction fee.
Julia compares the card with two alternatives. One is a 2% card with no annual fee, which earns $348 on the same $17,400. The other is a pair of no-fee cards: Capital One Savor on restaurants and supermarkets, with a 2% fallback for gas and travel. Comparing with only one flat card would miss the pair.
Welcome offers belong in a separate first-year calculation. Citi's page said the new-account bonus is unavailable if you currently have or previously had Citi Premier or Strata Premier.
What it earns
- 3 points per dollar on restaurants, supermarkets, gas and EV charging, air travel and other hotel purchases.
- 10 points per dollar on eligible hotels, rental cars and attractions through Citi Travel.
- 1 point per dollar on ordinary purchases.
What a point returns depends on the redemption your account offers. If the screen shows $75 for 10,000 points, that is 0.75 cent per point. If an eligible redemption shows $100 for 10,000 points, that is 1 cent each. The Studio's rating uses Citi Travel at 1 cent per point, and notes that the current calculator gives a lower cash value.
Citi's transfer partners include American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, EVA Air and Choice Hotels, among others. Each program has its own transfer ratio and booking rules, so a partner name does not promise your flight or a 1-to-1 conversion. Search for the award before transferring, compare it with a reasonable cash itinerary you would buy, subtract the award's taxes and fees, and divide the saving by the points required. A promotion offering more partner points is not, by itself, a reason to transfer.
The credits, used honestly
The card has one credit, a hotel benefit. It reduces the price of one qualifying Citi Travel hotel stay by $100, once per calendar year. The stay must cost at least $500 before taxes and fees, and several smaller stays do not combine.
The $100 saves the full amount only when the portal price matches the direct price; every dollar the portal costs above that comes out of it. If a hotel costs $520 through Citi Travel and $470 directly, the portal starts $50 higher. After the reduction Citi's subtotal is $420, which saves $50 against direct booking, before rewards and hotel-loyalty differences. If the matching direct room cost $420, the whole benefit would only bring the prices level. Julia counts the $50, not the $100, and only for a stay she would otherwise book.
Booking through a portal can also change who handles problems, how cancellation works and which hotel loyalty benefits apply, so compare the same room and terms.
The card lists travel protections for qualifying cancellation or interruption, delays, luggage and rentals. Payment requirements, covered reasons and exclusions apply, and you are reimbursed only after an eligible, approved claim. Rental damage protection is not blanket liability insurance.
The catch
The redemption value varies by account, and the Studio's own limitation says so: "Cash redemption varies by account; portal route and 500 dollar hotel threshold matter." Check your account's offer rather than assuming one. Owning a second Citi card does not replace that check; if you are considering one to change the cash value, confirm account-combining eligibility and the resulting quote first.
The portal matters. The hotel discount, the 10-point rate and the fixed 1-cent value all depend on booking through Citi Travel, and Julia gives the 10-point rate the same price check as the hotel.
Welcome-bonus eligibility depends on account history, and Julia warns against relying on an older review's 48 month rule. Check the actual application before counting a bonus.
Who it fits
It fits a household with diverse food and travel spending, a planned qualifying hotel stay and either a 1-cent redemption or a transfer for a trip it would take anyway. It fits less well a household whose spending is mostly restaurants and supermarkets, because a no-fee food card with a 2% fallback earns more at 1 cent per point, or one whose account offers only 0.75 cent, because even a flat 2% card then earns more.
On the Studio's everyday card test, Strata Premier scores 71 out of 100. The biggest part is value after costs across 3 household budgets, then reward flexibility, effort and 2 protections. Food and travel earnings, the eligible hotel discount and documented protections help; the fee and the portal requirement make the fit more specific, and the test includes losing the hotel discount.
The arithmetic
Julia's spending is $5,000 at restaurants, $7,000 at qualifying supermarkets, $2,400 on gas and $3,000 on flights and hotels earning 3 points: $17,400, or 52,200 points. Other purchases stay on an existing 2% card.
- A 2% card earns $348 on the $17,400.
- At 0.75 cent per point the points return $391.50, or $296.50 after the fee, which is $51.50 behind.
- At 1 cent per point they return $522, or $427 after the fee, which leads by $79.
- The no-fee pair: Savor earns $360 at 3% on $12,000 of restaurants and supermarkets, and the 2% fallback adds $108 on gas and travel, for $468. Strata Premier's $427 loses by $41.
- A transfer that replaces $783 of travel expense after unavoidable award charges is 1.5 cents per point. After the fee that is $688, which is $340 above the flat card and $220 above the Savor pair.
Before you apply
Open your own redemption screen and see what 10,000 points returns in cash and through Citi Travel. Price the actual hotel booking on both routes, with the same room and terms. Read the bonus eligibility on the application itself. The Studio checked these terms on October 6, 2026.
