Costco Anywhere Visa: fuel and dining earn more, warehouse shopping earns 2%

A Costco member's card paying 5% on Costco gas, 3% on dining and travel and 2% at Costco; rewards arrive once a year as a certificate.

The short answer

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi is a rewards card for Costco members, with useful categories beyond the warehouse. It has no separate annual fee with an active, paid Costco membership, and its rewards arrive as an annual certificate rather than monthly cash.

In Julia's example, $4,800 of warehouse spending earns $96 at 2%, exactly what a suitable 2% Visa earns, so shopping at Costco alone adds nothing. The difference comes from fuel and dining: $3,600 of qualifying fuel earns $168 against $72 on a 2% card, and $2,400 of eligible dining earns $72 against $48. Together they give $120 more than the flat card.

The Studio's one-line fit is "Existing Costco members buying fuel and dining." If you would join Costco mainly for the card, the membership comes out of that $120 and leaves $55, before membership tax or separate shopping benefits.

What it costs

The card has no separate annual fee with an active, paid Costco membership. Standard Gold Star membership currently costs $65 yearly, plus applicable tax, and the Studio's record carries that $65. If you would keep Costco anyway, the card adds no membership cost; if you were joining mainly for the card, include it. The Studio's score charges the full ordinary membership even for someone who already pays it, so every card starts from a consistent point.

The comparison throughout is a 2% Visa with no annual fee. There is no foreign transaction fee, which is useful but does not change the category rate or the purchase price. Julia's figures assume you pay without borrowing costs.

What it earns

  • 5% on eligible Costco gas.
  • 4% on other eligible gas and electric-vehicle charging.
  • 3% on restaurants and eligible travel.
  • 2% at Costco and Costco.com.
  • 1% on other purchases.

The two fuel rates share one annual spending limit of $7,000, then fall to 1%.

Citi generally delivers the rewards as an annual certificate after your February statement closes. Under the program's rules you can redeem it for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco warehouses, including Puerto Rico, and the instructions and deadline are on the certificate.

The credits, used honestly

The Studio's record lists no statement credits for the card. Two rewards need careful handling.

The annual certificate is worth its face value only if you can wait for it. It does not help with this month's bill, so Julia would pay for purchases before it arrives. A slightly bigger annual total may appeal less if you would rather redeem small amounts through the year, since cash-back cards do not all release rewards on the same schedule.

The Executive membership reward comes from a different program, and Julia keeps it apart. If a purchase gets a 2% Executive reward and you would keep that membership either way, count it on both sides. 2% from membership plus 2% from the card does not mean the card adds 4% over another 2% Visa.

On protection, the Studio's checks find an eligible damaged item covered but no covered-illness trip-cancellation reimbursement in the current benefits guide.

The catch

The fuel cap is shared. With $8,000 of fuel, all of it Costco gas, only the first $7,000 earns 5%. If you mix Costco gas with other eligible fuel, purchase order affects which dollars use the cap, and once it is gone another card may suit the next fill-up.

A bigger reward does not beat a lower price. A $70 fill-up with 5% back costs an effective $66.50; the same quantity and grade at $65 elsewhere with 2% back costs $63.70. Travel works the same way: an eligible booking may earn 3%, but a higher price can outweigh the extra reward. Earning $20 more on a booking that costs $100 more still leaves you worse off, so compare the same itinerary, refund terms and included services.

Ordinary purchases give the advantage back. And because Costco shopping itself only matches a 2% card, Julia would look at where she used the card rather than buy anything extra to improve the result.

Who it fits

It fits an existing Costco member who buys fuel and dines out, keeps warehouse purchases at 2% and puts miscellaneous spending on a flat card. Julia would be comfortable with that limited role, and with waiting for the annual certificate. It fits less well someone who wants rewards through the year, or who is joining Costco mainly for the card: the example leaves $55 after the membership.

On the Studio's everyday card test, the card scores 56 out of 100. Most of the score comes from value after costs across 3 household budgets, followed by reward flexibility, effort and 2 protections. Fuel and dining help; the full ordinary Costco membership cost and the wait for an annual certificate hold it back.

The arithmetic

Julia's budget is $4,800 at Costco, $3,600 of fuel ($2,400 at Costco gas and $1,200 of other qualifying fuel), $2,400 of eligible dining and $9,000 of other purchases, $19,800 in all.

  • Costco shopping: $96 at 2%, the same as a 2% Visa.
  • Fuel: $120 on the Costco gas and $48 on the other fuel, $168 against $72 on a 2% card. Dining: $72 against $48. Fuel and dining together give $120 more than the flat card.
  • Ordinary purchases: $9,000 at 1% earns $90 against $180, which gives back $90.
  • Everything on the Costco card: $426 against $396 on the flat card, ahead by only $30.
  • Split roles: the Costco card for warehouse, fuel and dining and a 2% card for the $9,000 earn $516 together, keeping the full $120 advantage over the flat card alone.
  • Fuel cap: with $8,000 of Costco gas, the first $7,000 earns $350 and the last $1,000 earns $10, for $360.
  • Joining for the card: $120 less the $65 membership leaves $55.

Before you apply

Decide on the Costco membership first, then the card. Check Citi's page for the current fuel rates and the $7,000 annual limit, and read the certificate's redemption rules and deadline. Compare pump prices before choosing where to fill up. The Studio checked these terms on October 6, 2026.
