In depth · from Julia’s review

Discover it Cash Back: equal to a 2% card only if every quarter fits

With $6,000 in 5% categories, Discover alone matched a 2% card at $480; paired with a 2% card for the rest it earned $660.

The short answer

Discover it Cash Back is a no-annual-fee card with rotating 5% bonus categories, a quarterly cap and an activation step each quarter. Eligible new cardmembers can also receive Cashback Match in the first year. It suits a household that is comfortable activating and checking a rotating calendar, and that uses the card where an offer fits purchases it already planned.

In Julia's example, a family spending $24,000 a year, with $6,000 fitting the categories, earns $480 on Discover alone. That is exactly what a flat 2% card such as Wells Fargo Active Cash earns. Keeping Discover for the category purchases and putting the rest on a 2% card earns $660. Cashback Match lifts the first year to $960, but that is not the forecast for every year afterward.

The card is a weaker fit for someone who will not activate each quarter or who would shop just to fill an allowance. The Studio's Wallet Score is 55 out of 100. Its verdict on fit is "A user comfortable activating and checking a rotating calendar." Its limitation: "Hypothetical shared calendar is a standardized test, not a prediction of issuer categories."

What it costs

There is no annual fee, and the Studio's rate card lists no membership cost. The cost is attention, plus the lower rate when a quarter does not fit: purchases above the quarterly cap or outside the categories earn 1%, against 2% on a flat card.

Julia compares Discover with a flat 2% card, and with using the two together. The first-year match is a first-year event, not a yearly value, so she judges the welcome year separately from the routine she would keep afterward.

What it earns

  • 5% on rotating quarterly categories, on up to $1,500 of combined purchases each quarter, after activation.
  • 1% above the cap and outside the categories.
  • Cashback Match in the first year for eligible new cardmembers.

Each $1 of Cashback Bonus gives $1 through cash options such as a statement credit or eligible bank deposit, so you do not need an airline transfer or an available award booking. Discover also has other redemption options. A gift-card promotion may offer more purchasing power, but only under its terms and at a merchant you would actually use, so Julia starts with the cash value and treats any gift-card extra as a separate improvement.

The credits, used honestly

Discover has no recurring statement credits. What it offers are a first-year match, a quarterly bonus and an introductory borrowing offer, and each has conditions.

  • Cashback Match: Discover matches the cash back earned during the first-year earning period. The reviewed offer covers eligible rewards earned from approval through the first 365 days, and the match is added within 2 billing periods afterward. Purchases must process during the matching period, and closed accounts are excluded.
  • Match timing: the match is not an instant doubling on every monthly statement, so next year's match should not be relied on to pay next month's bill. You can redeem ordinary cash back during the year without preventing eligible earnings from being matched.
  • Quarterly 5%: Julia counts it only on purchases she already planned. An extra $100 of things you do not need earns $5 and still leaves you $95 worse off.
  • Introductory offer: 15 months at 0% for purchases and balance transfers, with transfer fees. It is a borrowing offer, separate from rewards.

The catch

Read each quarter's category description before deciding that it fits. A mobile-wallet offer, a grocery category and a named online merchant are different rules, and the payment route, merchant classification and transaction date can all matter. Recognizing the store name is not always enough.

Activate each quarter: using the card last quarter does not mean the next offer is ready for you. Once you reach $1,500, the next eligible dollar ordinarily earns 1%, and shopping at a second 5% merchant does not create another allowance.

Discover accounts are moving to Capital One at different times. Added earning through Capital One Travel and Entertainment begins when the account becomes eligible, which does not mean every direct booking earns 5%, so compare the actual portal price and terms first. After the move, a rewards statement credit also will not cover your minimum payment, so keep that payment separate.

In the Studio's two insured-loss tests, no payable benefit was found in Discover's published benefit inventory, so the card earns no protection points there. That is not a claim that every account lacks coverage. Minimum payments alone are not a repayment plan, and rewards are not a reason to borrow more.

Who it fits

Discover fits a household whose planned purchases already line up with the quarterly categories, such as $1,200 of planned eligible spending in one quarter and $600 in the next, and that will activate each time. Julia would keep it for just the offers that suit: if the other 2 quarters do not fit at all, earning 5% instead of 2% on $1,800 still adds $54 for 2 activations and no extra shopping.

It fits less well when planned purchases do not line up, or when the household would arrange its shopping around the calendar. Julia would adjust her expectations rather than rearrange spending to fill every offer. After the first-year match ends, she reviews where purchases should go, and keeping the account does not have to mean keeping every purchase there.

The arithmetic

Julia's family spends $24,000 a year, with $6,000 fitting the rotating categories evenly across all 4 quarters.

  • Full fit: using the full $1,500 allowance each quarter earns $75 a quarter, or $300 for the year. With $18,000 of other purchases at 1%, Discover alone earns $480, exactly what a flat 2% card earns.
  • First year with Cashback Match: $960 after the match arrives. With the same spending in year 2, $480.
  • Year 2 with a fallback: keep the $300 of category rewards and earn $360 on the other purchases with a 2% card. The pair returns $660, which is $180 more than leaving everything on Discover. The $300 is not all new value: a 2% card would already earn $120 on those $6,000, so Discover adds $180 when all the quarterly allowances fit.
  • Partial fit: if only $750 qualifies each quarter, that is $3,000 for the year, earning $150. Putting the remaining $21,000 on Discover at 1% brings the total to $360, which is $120 behind the flat 2% card's $480. Using the 2% card for the rest earns $570, which is $90 more than the flat card alone.
  • One purchase: on a planned $300 purchase, Discover earns $15 at 5% and a 2% card earns $6. The category adds $9, so a $10 sale elsewhere can beat it.
  • Introductory offer: a planned $1,400 purchase repaid in 14 payments of $100 leaves room before the 15 months end, if the purchase is made near account opening and there are no other balances.

Before you apply

On the issuer's page today, check the current quarter's categories and activation steps, the terms of Cashback Match, the 15-month introductory offer and its transfer fee, and where your account stands in the move to Capital One. Look at what actually qualified on your statements before keeping or changing the setup: did you activate, did spending exceed a quarterly cap, and how much earned only 1%?
